Betsy DeVos was nominated by U.S. President Donald Trump and confirmed by the senate to be the secretary of education. DeVos is 11th U.S. secretary of education and has consistently demonstrated her passion for helping the undeserved American children access great education opportunities for the past few decades. Mrs. DeVos’ mother, a public school teacher, inspired her interest in education matters at an early age. The desire to fight for the rights of the undeserved in the society was reignited when she realized that not all American children access quality education.Her involvement in the education sector and acting as a voice for millions of American parents are some of the factors that brought her education policies and efforts into the limelight. For several years, DeVos has been involved directly or/and indirectly in various campaigns and policy-making approaches geared towards creating great educational opportunities for all children in her hometown and across the country.
As the education secretary, DeVos is dedicated to working together with president Trump is ensuring that all children get quality education opportunities regardless of their backgrounds in terms of household income status. She intends to achieve all these by giving parents an opportunity to choose their children’s educational settings, returning the mandate to control education systems to localities and states, and ensuring that education structures position students strategically on the right trajectory to build a successful careers.Her interaction with students, parents, and teachers, when she was working at the Grand Rapids (Michigan) Public Schools, changed her perspective about providing equal education opportunities for the American child.
Since the DeVos family started supporting a few disadvantaged children at the Potter’s House Christian School to get quality and safe education, Mrs. DeVos has never looked back in her philanthropic gestures and movements that help support education-oriented efforts or campaigns.Some of her notable philanthropic efforts include starting the Michigan based-committee called the Great Lakes Education Project, supporting the Florida tax-credit scholarship program through the Children Action Fund initiative, expanding educational choice through vouchers and tax credits, and the involvement in various educational choice options such as Charter Schools and Homeschooling as part of the process to give parents an opportunity to have power to choose their children’s schooling options among other philanthropic efforts.Before ascending to the position of the education secretary, DeVos worked at an investment management firm called The Windquest Group, where she served as the chairman. She also served as the chairman of the Michigan Republican Party for six years. Besides, Mrs. DeVos has been on the boards of various organizations such as the American Federation for Children (AFC, and the Kids Hope USA among others. DeVos graduated from the Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She is married to philanthropist and politician Dick DeVos and both have been blessed with four children.
